We get asked all the time about what there actually is to do around Irvine beyond the Great Park itself, and the honest answer is quite a bit, spread across a handful of nearby destinations. Some of these are right in Irvine, while others are a short drive away in neighboring Orange County cities. Here's what we think is worth knowing about entertainment near Irvine right now.
Key Takeaways
- Irvine Spectrum Center remains one of the area's biggest entertainment hubs, with shopping, dining, and live comedy
- Segerstrom Center for the Arts offers major performing arts programming a short drive from Irvine
- Anaheim's cluster of Angel Stadium, Honda Center, and Disneyland is all within about 15 to 20 minutes
- One well-known nearby venue has permanently closed, which is worth knowing before planning around it
Irvine Spectrum Center: Shopping, Dining, and More
Irvine Spectrum Center has been a major entertainment and shopping destination since it opened in 1995, and it continues to expand its offerings well beyond retail. The complex includes a movie theater with a luxury auditorium wing, a classic carousel, a climbing structure for kids, and live outdoor music on select weekend evenings. The center's former Giant Wheel has been replaced by the Spectrum SunWheel, a taller, redesigned observation wheel expected to return in fall 2026, so it's worth checking current status directly if that's specifically what you're hoping to ride.
What You'll Find at Irvine Spectrum Center
- A movie theater featuring a luxury auditorium wing with reserved seating
- A classic carousel and a multi-level climbing structure for kids
- Live outdoor music on select Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings
- The new Spectrum SunWheel, replacing the former Giant Wheel, expected to return in fall 2026
Live Comedy at the Irvine Improv
The Irvine Improv, located within Irvine Spectrum Center, remains one of Orange County's top destinations for live comedy. It regularly hosts a rotating lineup of touring comedians alongside dinner and drink service, making it a solid option for a night out close to home. Since it's part of the larger Spectrum Center complex, it pairs easily with dinner or shopping before or after a show.
Why This Venue Is Worth Knowing About
- A well-established comedy club with a regularly rotating lineup
- Located directly within Irvine Spectrum Center
- Dinner and drink service available during shows
- Easy to pair with other Spectrum Center activities the same evening
Segerstrom Center for the Arts
Segerstrom Center for the Arts, located a short drive away in Costa Mesa, is one of the region's premier performing arts venues, hosting touring Broadway productions, symphony performances, dance, and other major national and international acts. It's a different kind of entertainment experience compared to the more casual, retail-adjacent options closer to Irvine itself. For residents looking for a proper night at the theater, this is generally the closest option of that caliber.
What Segerstrom Center Offers
- Touring Broadway productions and major theatrical performances
- Symphony, dance, and other large-scale live performances
- A short drive from Irvine, located in neighboring Costa Mesa
- One of the region's most established venues for this kind of programming
Anaheim's Sports and Entertainment Cluster
Angel Stadium, Honda Center, and Disneyland are all clustered together in Anaheim, roughly 15 to 20 minutes from Irvine depending on traffic. Angel Stadium is home to the Los Angeles Angels, while Honda Center hosts the Anaheim Ducks and a steady lineup of touring concerts throughout the year. Disneyland and Disney California Adventure round out the cluster, making this stretch of Anaheim a realistic option for sports, concerts, and a full theme park day, all within a short drive of Irvine.
Why This Cluster Is Worth the Short Drive
- Angel Stadium, home of the Los Angeles Angels
- Honda Center, home of the Anaheim Ducks and a regular concert venue
- Disneyland and Disney California Adventure nearby as well
- All three within roughly 15 to 20 minutes of Irvine
What to Know About Recent Changes Nearby
The FivePoint Amphitheatre, which previously operated within the Great Park itself and hosted major touring concerts, permanently closed in October 2023 after six years of operation. It's worth knowing this if you've seen older references to it, since it's no longer an active venue and isn't part of the current entertainment lineup near Irvine. Entertainment options in this area continue to shift as new venues open and older ones close, so it's always worth confirming current status before planning around a specific spot.
Why This Matters When Planning a Visit
- FivePoint Amphitheatre permanently closed in October 2023
- Older articles and searches may still reference it as active
- Entertainment venues in this area do shift over time
- Confirming current status directly is always a good habit before planning a visit
FAQs
Is the FivePoint Amphitheatre still open for concerts?
No, we want to be clear about this since it comes up often. It permanently closed in 2023, so it's no longer part of the current entertainment scene near Irvine.
Is Irvine Spectrum Center's observation wheel currently running?
It's been replaced by the new Spectrum SunWheel, so we'd recommend checking directly before a visit if that's specifically what you're hoping to ride. The expected return is fall 2026.
Is Disneyland realistic for a day trip from Irvine?
We think it works well as a day trip, since it's only about 15 to 20 minutes away. A lot of our clients treat it as a regular, easy outing rather than a special occasion trip.
